Our state-of-the-art imaging and radiation technology, in combination with an outstanding network of Medical Oncologists/Hematologists, Radiation Oncologists, and Diagnostic Radiologists, afford patients multiple treatment options. Innovative therapies, dedicated care teams and Nurse Navigators are just a few options among the array of available services.

What is Radiation Therapy?

Radiation therapy is a very effective cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells, shrink tumors and prevent cancer from spreading. This is accomplished without damaging healthy cells. It can be combined with chemotherapy or surgery to improve results. Radiation may be administered in two ways: External Radiation Therapy (external beam therapy) uses x-rays and gamma rays, and is done as an outpatient. Internal Radiation Therapy (brachytherapy) involves radiation placed inside or near the tumor; this may require a hospital stay. In addition, Systemic Radiation Therapy uses radioactive materials that are swallowed or injected into the body. Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) is an advanced radiation therapy, using imaging and motion management tools to target tumors. Doctors can now see, measure, track and treat tumors with remarkable precision…even when moving.

PET/CT Scan

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a non-invasive imaging procedure that displays the metabolic activity of the body, before anatomical changes occur. This scan is usually combined with a CT (computerized tomography) scan that displays various anatomical features such as shape, size and location of various organs and muscles. Such diseases as cancer can be effectively detected using PET. Since cancer cells are very metabolic and synthesize the injected radioactive glucose (done before the exam), the scan reveals where the high glucose areas of the body are. In some cases, these are tumors. A PET scan can also detect if cancer has spread or is isolated to one area. PET and CT scans are highly accurate in visualizing moving organs and other body parts with higher anatomical variation in great detail, such as brain abnormalities and coronary heart disease.
